WOMEN'S
CRICKET
Formation
In Shepparton it was evident there was significant female interest in playing cricket. A number of female cricketers were playing for various clubs throughout the Cricket Shepparton Assocation.
For a number of years a number of committed people (mainly Stacey Lothian, Steven Tate, Tony Giblin and Alana Baldi) worked hard towards the development of a women’s team.
In 2018 all this significant effort came to fruition with Shepparton Youth Club United entering a team in the newly formed Goulburn Murray Cricket Women’s Competition.
For the 2018/19 season the matches were a modified T20 format. In 2019/20 seasons onward there was establishment of A grade and B Grade competitions within the Goulburn Murray Cricket league. Both competitions continue to play modified versions of the T20 format.
First Match
The first match was held on Sunday 11th November 2018 at the Gunbower Recreation Reserve. Chris Giblin was the first coach for the team and Stacey Lothian the captain for the first season.
The women who represented SYCU CC in the first match were Bridget Drum, Lia Beecroft, Raechel Gardiner, Emma Fearn, Stacey Lothian, Dinesha Patabandige and Alana Baldi. The team ended up making 8/54 and had Leitchville/Gunbower 4/91. It was an exciting day and for many it was their first time playing in an all-female team.
2021/22
The 2021/22 women’s team played in the A grade competition of the Goulburn Murray Cricket competition. During the season, the team, led by captain Lia Beecroft was competitive and only just missed out on a grand final berth. In future seasons the club hopes to also enter a team in the B Grade competition.
2023/24 Season
SYCUCC fielded a single team in the GMC with the team in the top 4 throughout the year and reaching the finals. The team won the first final round v Nagambie but then lost in the preliminary final to Kyabram.
